William Greenwood, British glass artist based in Darmstadt, Germany studied 3D Design (Ceramics & Glass) at Buckinghamshire College (now Chilterns University). After graduating in 1988, William got side-tracked into graphic design and didn’t work with glass again until 2004 when he ordered a ‘Firecracker’ kiln from Kilncare. Since that time he has re-established himself as a fulltime kiln-worked glass artist. The main focus of his work is creating sculptural forms from experimental ‘open-castings’.

William explains: I model my sculptural ideas in clay and wax to build 50/50 plaster moulds. I then pack the moulds with heavy lead crystal like ‘Gaffer’ or ‘Ornela’ 40% rod and fire them in the ‘Firecracker’. Using the optional side heat on full, the glass soaks for at least 4 hours at about 860 C and I anneal for a minimum of 4 days. I have to say that the ‘Firecracker’ kiln is a real ‘trooper’ – after four years of very heavy abuse, I’ve only had one blown fuse.
